JOHN KETTERING is a partner at Pietragallo Gordon Alfano Bosick & Raspanti, LLP. He is a member of the Business & Corporate, Bankruptcy, and the Commercial Litigation Practice Groups.
With over a decade of experience, Mr. Kettering guides clients facing all types of business challenges. His strategic approach, attention to detail, and advocacy skills assist companies navigating a variety of commercial issues. He works with business owners, executives, and entrepreneurs to understand their unique challenges and deliver tailored legal strategies and pragmatic results.
A strong courtroom advocate, Mr. Kettering represents clients in a variety of commercial disputes such as breach of contract claims, shareholder and partnership disagreements, and other business torts. He has served as first-chair trial counsel in both jury and non-jury matters while also successfully arguing cases before appellate courts and commercial arbitration panels. His business experience also includes transactional matters. Mr. Kettering has steered clients through purchase and sale agreements, corporate restructurings, and corporate governance documents. He has provided counsel to a variety of businesses which include publicly traded corporations, financial institutions, closely held corporations, partnerships, non-profit organizations, and sole proprietors.
Mr. Kettering complements his business practice with comprehensive real estate litigation. He manages commercial lease disputes, lease negotiations, as well as land use and zoning issues. His court-appointed roles involving real estate have included serving as counsel for a federally appointed receiver, sequestrator, and as court-appointed special master.
As a results-drive attorney, Mr. Kettering also represents creditors and debtors in bankruptcy courts nationwide to maximize their recoveries. His work encompasses secured and unsecured creditors as well as claimants with administrative claims or executory contracts. He has chaired unsecured creditors’ committees in complex Chapter 11 proceedings, achieving significant creditor recoveries.
Professionally, Mr. Kettering holds memberships in multiple bar associations, including the Allegheny County, Mercer County, Pennsylvania, and American Bar Associations. He is an active contributor to legal publications, with articles in The Pennsylvania Lawyer and the Pennsylvania Bar Association’s Bar News. He’s been named a Pennsylvania Super Lawyers Rising Star in Business and Corporate Law and being selected for Best Lawyers in America: Ones to Watch® since 2021 across several practice areas, including Corporate Governance and Compliance Law, Nonprofit and Charities Law, Bankruptcy and Creditor Debtor Rights, and Insolvency and Reorganization Law.
Beyond his legal practice, Mr. Kettering is also deeply committed to community development. He serves as a director of the Valley Shenango Economic Development Corporation, which successfully redeveloped a portion of an abandoned Westinghouse complex into an urban aquaponics farm. In January 2025, Mr. Kettering became a Commissioner in Ross Township where he contributes to policymaking, community land use, ordinance development, and municipal financial management.
Mr. Kettering earned his J.D., cum laude, from the University of Pittsburgh Law School. While there, he served as the production editor of the University of Pittsburgh Tax Review. During his tenure there, he was awarded with the Gibson Award, the W. Edward Sell Award, the American Bankruptcy Institute Medal of Excellence, and Cali Awards for Bankruptcy, Business Organizations, and Securities Arbitration. He received his B.A. in Economics and History, cum laude, from the University of Pittsburgh as a member of the Dean’s Honor List.
Mr. Kettering is admitted to the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania and Ohio. He is also admitted to the United States District Court for the Eastern District and Western District of Pennsylvania.
