Joseph D. Mancano
JOSEPH D. MANCANO is a partner with Pietragallo Gordon Alfano Bosick & Raspanti, LLP, where he serves as Chair of the White Collar Criminal Defense Group. Mr. Mancano is based in the firm’s center city Philadelphia office.
Mr. Mancano focuses his practice on representing clients in a wide- range of complex criminal and civil cases including antitrust, RICO, bank fraud, securities, health care, income taxes, and qui tam/ whistleblower claims. He is an accomplished trial attorney and has tried over 100 criminal and civil cases to verdict in state and federal courts throughout the United States. In addition to his active trial practice, Mr. Mancano also handles appeals in federal and state courts.
Mr. Mancano has represented a broad range of clients including banks, manufacturing companies, universities, physicians, hospitals, home health agencies, lawyers, accountants, securities brokers, insurers and reinsurers, corporate executives, government contractors and professional staffing companies. He also routinely conducts internal corporate investigations.
Mr. Mancano joined the U.S. Department of Justice under its Honors Program in 1979. He served as a Trial Attorney in the Philadelphia Field Office of the Antitrust Division from 1979-1982. From 1982-1985, Mr. Mancano served as a Trial Attorney in the Philadelphia Strike Force office of the Justice Department’s Organized Crime and Racketeering Section. Mr. Mancano continued his government career in 1985 when he was appointed an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the St. Louis, Missouri office of the President’s Drug Enforcement Task Force. As a Justice Department Attorney, Mr. Mancano received official commendations from the Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Antitrust Division, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Drug Enforcement Administration, Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, Internal Revenue Service and U.S. Customs Service.
Mr. Mancano has lectured on myriad topics at law schools, business schools, the FBI Training Academy and to bar association groups, health care providers, special investigative units of national insurers and accounting societies. He has been selected by his peers as one of Pennsylvania’s Super Lawyers for White Collar Criminal Defense from 2005 through 2011, an honor reserved for the top 5% of the bar.
Mr. Mancano serves on the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers White Collar Crime Committee and the Public Affairs Sub-Committee of the White Collar Crime Committee. Mr. Mancano is a member of the American Bar Association, Criminal Justice Section and the Section of Antitrust Law, the Criminal Law Committee of the Federal Bar Association in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the American Health Lawyers Association, Antitrust Practice Group, The Federalist Society, the Justinian Society, and the National Italian American Foundation. He serves as President of The St. Thomas More Society of Philadelphia, an organization of Catholic lawyers dedicated to promoting the highest ethical standards in the legal profession. In addition, Mr. Mancano serves on the Board of Governors of the Civil War Museum of Philadelphia.
Mr. Mancano received his law degree from the Temple University School of Law, where he was on the Dean’s Honor Roll. He received the Philadelphia Trial Lawyers Award for outstanding achievement in trial advocacy. He also attended Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Missouri, earning a B.A. with Honors in Political Science, and St. Joseph’s Preparatory School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he has served as President, Vice-President and Treasurer of the Alumni Board of Governors.
In addition to being licensed to practice in Pennsylvania, Mr. Mancano is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern, Middle and Western Districts of Pennsylvania, the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Third and Eighth Circuits, the U.S. Tax Court and the U.S. Supreme Court.
